- Teach Yourself – If you already play a musical instrument and know how to read music, then you could try teaching yourself to play the piano. This is a popular instrument and there are hundreds of different beginner’s tutorials available in a range of formats, including books, DVDs, and online video tutorials. This is a cost-effective and time-efficient way to learn how to play a piano. However, if you do not already play an instrument or read music, you can find learning to play from books and DVDs difficult. Many people who start from scratch can find it difficult to get past a certain level of skill on their own. Hard-to-break bad habits are easy to form – BEWARE !
Professional Lessons – Professional piano lessons provide you with a structured, focused learning path, which does make it easy for you to achieve your learning goals. A piano teacher will be able to show you techniques and ensure you have mastered them properly before you continue. This can help you to achieve a good level of proficiency quickly and with minimum hassle. However, professional music lessons can be expensive and time-consuming, and you may struggle to fit them into a busy lifestyle.
If you want to learn the piano, you will need an instrument to practice on. Pianos can be very expensive and will take up a lot of room in your home, and this is not a practical option for most beginners. However, you can get some very affordable electronic keyboards. Yamaha, Roland and Korg are well-known for their range of quality keyboards that can provide a very realistic sound and are ideal for learners. With a keyboard, you will be able to easily move your instrument around so that you can practice anywhere you like. You will also be able to plug in headphones, which will allow you to practice as much as you like without worrying about disturbing anyone else. It is important to buy a keyboard which has a ” feel ” or ” touch ” as close as possible to the feel or touch of a piano. Often referred to as a ” weighted ” keyboard. This helps develop a better technique.
If you are serious about learning how to play a piano and you have the space and money available, then it is a good idea to invest in a piano for your home. Although keyboards are useful for beginners, when you progress to more complex techniques there is no substitute for the real thing.
